Wine Quotes: Leif Ericson

Leif_Erikson_6c_1968_issueLeif Ericson, Norse explorer extraordinaire and one of the very first men from the Old World to set foot onto the North American continent (with the first man being a merchant named Bjarni Herjólfsson…and sorry folks, Christopher Columbus wasn’t even close to being the first, second, or even third European to set foot on North America).

Upon seeing and surveying the mysterious and new land he had found, Leif named it “Vinland” (literally meaning Vineland), after seeing how many vines and grapes were there.  And Leif was on to something – there are more species of indigenous grapes in North America than on any other continent!
